Abstract
Plastic waste has become a major environmental concern globally, with urban environments facing significant challenges in managing this waste effectively. This thesis presents a case study that assesses plastic waste management strategies in urban areas, aiming to provide valuable insights and recommendations for sustainable waste management practices. The study focuses on understanding the current state of plastic waste management, identifying key issues and challenges, and evaluating existing strategies and their effectiveness. The research methodology employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Through interviews, surveys, and data analysis, the study gathered information on current waste management practices, stakeholder perspectives, and community engagement in plastic waste management. The literature review explored global best practices in plastic waste management and provided a theoretical framework for analyzing the case study findings. The findings of the study revealed several key insights into plastic waste management in urban environments. These included the prevalence of single-use plastics, inadequate waste collection and recycling infrastructure, limited public awareness and education, and challenges in stakeholder collaboration. The study also identified successful initiatives and innovative approaches to plastic waste management that could be adapted and implemented in the case study area. Based on the analysis of the findings, the thesis proposes a set of recommendations for improving plastic waste management strategies in urban environments. These recommendations focus on enhancing waste collection and recycling infrastructure, promoting sustainable consumption patterns, increasing public awareness and engagement, fostering stakeholder collaboration, and implementing policy and regulatory measures to reduce plastic waste generation. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the ongoing discourse on plastic waste management by providing a comprehensive assessment of strategies in urban environments. By highlighting key challenges and opportunities, the study offers valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, environmental practitioners, and community stakeholders to develop more effective and sustainable solutions for managing plastic waste. Ultimately, the research aims to support the transition towards a circular economy and a more environmentally sustainable future.
