The rapid urbanization and population growth have led to an increase in waste generation, posing significant environmental challenges in urban areas. To address these challenges, sustainable waste management practices have gained prominence as effective solutions to minimize environmental impact and promote resource efficiency. This thesis aims to assess the effectiveness of sustainable waste management practices in urban areas through a comprehensive analysis of current strategies, challenges, and opportunities. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms related to sustainable waste management in urban areas. The chapter sets the foundation for the subsequent chapters by outlining the importance and relevance of the research study. Chapter Two comprises a detailed literature review that explores existing knowledge and research on sustainable waste management practices in urban areas. The chapter examines various aspects such as waste generation trends, waste collection and transportation systems, recycling and composting initiatives, waste-to-energy technologies, policy frameworks, and best practices from global case studies.
