Abstract
Waste management is a critical issue facing urban areas worldwide, with implications for public health, environmental sustainability, and resource conservation. This thesis examines the assessment of sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, focusing on strategies to improve waste management efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. The study aims to evaluate current waste management practices, identify challenges and opportunities, and propose recommendations for enhancing sustainability in urban waste management systems. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, and the structure of the thesis. The chapter also includes definitions of key terms to establish a common understanding of the concepts discussed throughout the thesis. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review on sustainable waste management practices in urban areas. The review covers ten key areas, including waste generation trends, collection and transportation methods, recycling and recovery technologies, waste-to-energy processes, regulatory frameworks, public participation strategies, economic incentives, environmental impacts, social implications, and best practices from global case studies.
