Abstract
Urbanization poses a significant challenge to biodiversity conservation efforts in protected areas worldwide. The rapid expansion of urban areas encroaches upon natural habitats, leading to habitat fragmentation, loss of biodiversity, and disruption of ecological processes. This thesis aims to assess the impact of urbanization on biodiversity conservation in a protected area through a comprehensive study that integrates ecological, social, and economic perspectives. The research focuses on understanding the extent of urbanization within the protected area, identifying key threats to biodiversity conservation, evaluating current conservation strategies, and proposing recommendations for sustainable management practices. The study begins with a thorough review of the literature on urbanization, biodiversity conservation, and protected area management to provide a solid theoretical foundation for the research. The methodology chapter outlines the research design, data collection methods, and analytical techniques employed in the study, including field surveys, interviews with stakeholders, and spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Findings from the field surveys reveal the direct and indirect impacts of urbanization on biodiversity, including habitat loss, species displacement, and increased human-wildlife conflicts. The analysis also highlights the challenges faced by conservation authorities in balancing the needs of urban development with biodiversity conservation goals. Through a detailed discussion of the findings, this thesis identifies key recommendations for enhancing biodiversity conservation in the face of urbanization pressures.
