Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project aims to conduct a comparative examination and evaluation of world religions in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of the beliefs, practices, and impacts of major faith traditions across different cultures and regions. The study will focus on exploring the core tenets of Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and other significant religions to identify both commonalities and differences in their teachings and philosophies. Through a systematic and comparative approach, this research will delve into the historical development of these religions, their sacred texts, rituals, moral codes, and the ways in which they shape individual and collective identities. By examining the doctrinal foundations and ethical principles of each faith, the project aims to highlight the diverse perspectives on fundamental questions related to the nature of existence, human purpose, morality, and the divine. Furthermore, this comparative analysis will investigate the social and cultural impacts of world religions, including their roles in shaping political systems, promoting interfaith dialogue, fostering community cohesion, and influencing artistic expressions and ethical norms. By exploring the historical interactions and conflicts between different religious groups, the study seeks to shed light on the complexities of religious pluralism and the challenges of coexistence in a multicultural world. The research will also address contemporary issues related to religious freedom, tolerance, and extremism, examining how different belief systems respond to modern challenges such as globalization, secularism, and technological advances. By critically evaluating the strengths and limitations of various religions in addressing moral dilemmas and social injustices, the project aims to contribute to a nuanced understanding of the role of faith in promoting human flourishing and ethical behavior. Overall, this comparative examination of world religions seeks to foster a deeper appreciation of the rich tapestry of global spiritual traditions, encouraging dialogue and mutual respect among followers of different faiths. By highlighting the shared values of compassion, justice, and peace that underpin many religious teachings, the research aims to promote intercultural understanding and cooperation in an increasingly interconnected and diverse world.

Thesis Overview

INTRODUCTION

Religion could help save the ecology of our planet. Religious values are core to many people in this world3 and we must speak to this core to realize the radical ethical changes required to save our planet.4 Laws designed to prevent environmental degradation must be crafted and implemented with recognition that, in the face of scientific uncertainty, religious values play an important role alongside the traditional cost-benefit analysis, typically claimed to constitute rational decision-making.5 In this article, we have chosen 2006]

RELIGIONS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

to examine the religious path to an environmental ethic in order to offer “a framework that raises ethical issues and expects ethical conduct.” We hope that religious principles will serve as a “stepping stone[]” in bridging the gap between human-centered utilitarianism and the environmental moralist approach.8 Scientific uncertainty exists in many environmental decisions. Therefore, value choices must be made in the absence of known future consequences.10 Religious values, as well as other values informing policy decisions in the face of uncertainty, should be acknowledged so that they may be debated openly and honestly.11 environmental values relevant to their decisionmaking” including “certain ‘squishy’ values”); But see Bruce Yandle, Mr. Lomborg and the Common Law, 53 CASE W.
