Abstract
Dumping in Dixie refers to the practice of locating hazardous waste facilities in predominantly African American communities in the Southern United States. This research project aims to investigate the intersection of race, class, and environmental quality in relation to waste disposal in the Dixie region. The historical legacy of racial segregation and discrimination has resulted in the disproportionate siting of waste facilities near minority communities, leading to environmental racism and inequities in exposure to environmental hazards. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interviews and community engagement to examine the impact of dumping on the health and well-being of residents in affected areas. By analyzing demographic and environmental data, the research aims to uncover patterns of environmental injustice and assess the extent to which race and class influence the distribution of environmental burdens in Dixie. Furthermore, the project seeks to explore the role of regulatory policies and political power dynamics in perpetuating environmental inequalities in the region. By examining the decision-making processes that govern waste disposal and environmental protection, the research aims to identify opportunities for policy interventions and community empowerment to address environmental injustices in Dixie. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the broader understanding of environmental justice issues and inform efforts to promote environmental equity in marginalized communities. By highlighting the intersectional nature of race, class, and environmental quality, the study aims to raise awareness about the impact of dumping on vulnerable populations and advocate for more inclusive and sustainable waste management practices in the Dixie region. Overall, this research project addresses a critical gap in the literature on environmental justice and provides valuable insights into the complex relationship between race, class, and environmental quality in the context of waste disposal in Dixie. The findings have the potential to inform policy initiatives, community-based interventions, and advocacy efforts aimed at advancing environmental justice and promoting health equity in the Southern United States.
