Thesis Abstract

Solid waste landfills are a common waste management practice in Nigeria, handling a significant portion of the country's generated waste. However, these landfills have been associated with various environmental impacts that can pose serious risks to human health and the ecosystem. This study aims to investigate the impact of solid waste landfills in Nigeria from an environmental perspective. The research will focus on assessing the environmental contamination resulting from leachate and gas emissions at landfill sites. Leachate, a liquid formed as water percolates through waste materials, can contain various pollutants that may seep into the surrounding soil and water bodies, leading to contamination. Gas emissions from landfills, such as methane and carbon dioxide, are potent greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Additionally, the study will evaluate the effects of landfill operations on soil quality and groundwater contamination. Improper waste disposal practices can degrade soil quality, affecting its fertility and ability to support plant growth. Moreover, contaminants from landfills can leach into groundwater sources, compromising water quality and posing health risks to nearby communities. Furthermore, the research will explore the impact of solid waste landfills on air quality in the vicinity. Landfill sites can emit odors and particulate matter into the air, which may result in respiratory issues and other health problems for residents living nearby. Understanding the extent of air pollution from landfills is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate these negative effects. The study will also investigate the socio-economic implications of solid waste landfills in Nigeria. The proximity of landfill sites to residential areas can lower property values and negatively impact the well-being of local communities. Additionally, the presence of waste pickers at landfills highlights the social issues related to waste management and the informal sector's role in the recycling economy. Overall, this research aims to provide valuable insights into the environmental impact of solid waste landfills in Nigeria and raise awareness about the need for sustainable waste management practices. By identifying the key challenges and potential solutions related to landfill operations, this study seeks to inform policymakers, waste management practitioners, and the public on the importance of addressing the environmental consequences of solid waste disposal in the country.
