Thesis Abstract

Construction projects are vital for the development of infrastructure in Nigeria. However, delays in project delivery have been a major challenge plaguing the construction industry in the country. This research aims to investigate the effects of construction delays on project delivery in Nigeria. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of project data and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders in the construction industry. A sample of construction projects across different sectors in Nigeria will be selected for analysis. The quantitative analysis will focus on identifying the common causes of delays in construction projects, such as poor planning, inadequate funding, changes in design, and delays in material delivery. Through qualitative interviews with project managers, contractors, and government officials, the study will explore the impacts of construction delays on project delivery. These interviews will provide insight into the specific challenges faced by different stakeholders in the construction industry and the strategies they employ to mitigate delays. Additionally, the qualitative data will help in understanding the broader implications of delays on project cost, quality, and overall success. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on construction project management in Nigeria and provide valuable insights for improving project delivery processes. By identifying the root causes of delays and their impacts on project outcomes, this study aims to inform policies and practices that can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of construction projects in the country. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to highlight the importance of addressing construction delays in Nigeria to ensure timely and successful project delivery. By understanding the factors contributing to delays and their effects on project outcomes, stakeholders in the construction industry can work together to implement strategies that minimize delays and improve overall project delivery. This research has the potential to inform decision-makers, project managers, and other stakeholders on best practices for managing construction projects in Nigeria and ultimately contribute to the sustainable development of infrastructure in the country.

Thesis Overview

Construction delay has become endemic in Nigeria. It is imperative to create awareness of the extent to which delays can adversely affect project delivery. This paper identifies, by questionnaire evaluates and through empirical method assesses the effects of construction delays.

THE EFFECTS OF CONSTRUCTION DELAYS ON PROJECTS DELIVERY IN NIGERIA (ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE PROJECT TOPICS AND MATERIALS)

The findings showed that time and cost overruns were frequent effects of delay. Delay had significant effect on completion cost and time of 61 building projects studied. Client-related delay is significant in Nigeria. Acceleration of site activities coupled with improved clients’ project management procedure and inclusion of appropriate contingency allowance in precontract estimate should assuage the adverse effect of construction delays.
