Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Air pollution control within an industrial environment is a critical issue that requires urgent attention to safeguard the health of workers and surrounding communities. This study focuses on the case of the Port Harcourt Refinery in Rivers State, Nigeria, as a representative industrial facility facing significant air pollution challenges. The research aims to assess the current air pollution control measures in place at the refinery and propose recommendations for improvement. The methodology involves a combination of field assessments, data collection, and analysis of existing air pollution control technologies at the refinery. Air quality monitoring is conducted both within the facility and in the surrounding areas to evaluate the impact of refinery emissions on ambient air quality. Emission sources such as flaring, combustion processes, and transportation activities are identified and quantified to determine their contribution to air pollution. The findings reveal that the Port Harcourt Refinery faces several air pollution challenges, including particulate matter emissions, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and greenhouse gases. The existing air pollution control measures include the use of scrubbers, flaring reduction strategies, and emission monitoring systems. However, there are gaps in the implementation and effectiveness of these control measures, leading to persistent air quality issues. Based on the assessment, recommendations are proposed to enhance air pollution control at the refinery. These include the installation of advanced pollution control technologies such as electrostatic precipitators, selective catalytic reduction systems, and continuous emission monitoring systems. Improvements in maintenance practices, regular inspection of equipment, and training of personnel are also suggested to ensure the optimal performance of air pollution control systems. In conclusion, addressing air pollution control within industrial environments like the Port Harcourt Refinery is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. By implementing the recommended measures, the refinery can reduce its impact on air quality, mitigate health risks for workers and nearby communities, and demonstrate environmental responsibility. This research contributes to the broader goal of promoting sustainable industrial practices and improving air quality management in industrial settings.
