Abstract
Property tax assessment on residential properties in Imo State is a crucial aspect of local government revenue generation and administration. This study aims to evaluate the current property tax assessment practices in Imo State, Nigeria, specifically focusing on residential properties. The research will explore the existing property tax laws and regulations in Imo State and assess their effectiveness in generating revenue fairly and efficiently. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data will be gathered through the analysis of property tax records, financial reports, and other relevant documents from the Imo State Board of Internal Revenue. Qualitative data will be collected through interviews and surveys with property owners, tax assessors, government officials, and other stakeholders involved in the property tax assessment process. The research will examine the criteria used to assess property taxes on residential properties in Imo State, including factors such as property size, location, and market value. It will also investigate the challenges and shortcomings of the current property tax assessment system, such as inconsistencies in assessment practices, lack of transparency, and issues of corruption and tax evasion. Furthermore, the study will explore best practices in property tax assessment from other regions or countries that could be adapted to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of property tax administration in Imo State. Recommendations will be made to enhance the property tax assessment process, promote compliance among property owners, and increase revenue collection for local government development projects. Overall, this research aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on property tax administration in Imo State and provide valuable insights for policymakers, tax authorities, and other stakeholders involved in local government revenue generation. By evaluating the current property tax assessment practices and proposing recommendations for improvement, this study seeks to support the sustainable development and fiscal stability of Imo State through effective property tax administration on residential properties.
