Thesis Abstract

Outdoor air pollution is a significant environmental health concern in Nigeria, with growing urbanization and industrialization leading to increased emissions of pollutants. This research aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on the health impact of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria and identify future research needs in this area. Epidemiological studies have linked exposure to outdoor air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3) to various adverse health outcomes including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and premature mortality. Vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk. Despite the growing body of evidence on the health effects of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria, there are several gaps in knowledge that need to be addressed. One key area for future research is the characterization of air pollutant levels across different regions in Nigeria, as existing data is limited and often not representative of the entire country. Understanding the sources and composition of air pollutants is essential for developing effective mitigation strategies. Another important research need is the assessment of the long-term health effects of exposure to outdoor air pollution in Nigeria. Most studies conducted in the country have focused on short-term health outcomes, and there is a lack of data on the chronic effects of air pollution. Longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate the impact of prolonged exposure to pollutants on respiratory and cardiovascular health. Furthermore, there is a need to investigate the interaction between outdoor air pollution and other environmental and social determinants of health in Nigeria. Factors such as indoor air quality, occupational exposures, socioeconomic status, and access to healthcare services can influence the health impact of air pollution. A comprehensive understanding of these interactions is crucial for developing targeted interventions to reduce the burden of air pollution-related diseases. In conclusion, addressing the health impact of outdoor air pollution in Nigeria requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates environmental science, public health, and policy development. Future research efforts should focus on filling existing knowledge gaps, improving air quality monitoring infrastructure, and implementing evidence-based interventions to protect the health of the Nigerian population.
