Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Solid waste management is a significant environmental issue in urban centers in Nigeria. The rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization have led to the generation of large quantities of solid waste, which poses a threat to public health and the environment. This study aims to investigate the impact of solid waste in urban centers in Nigeria by examining the current waste management practices, identifying challenges faced in solid waste management, and proposing sustainable solutions. Through a combination of field surveys, interviews, and data analysis, this research found that inadequate waste collection and disposal systems are major contributing factors to the solid waste problem in urban areas. Improper waste disposal practices such as open dumping and burning of waste further exacerbate the situation, leading to pollution of land, water, and air. The study highlights the implications of solid waste on public health, including the spread of diseases and contamination of water sources. It also discusses the socio-economic impacts of poor waste management, such as reduced property values and tourism potential in urban centers. Additionally, the research explores the environmental consequences of solid waste, including soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. Challenges identified in solid waste management in Nigerian urban centers include inadequate infrastructure, lack of enforcement of regulations, insufficient funding, and limited public awareness and participation. To address these challenges, the study recommends the implementation of integrated waste management strategies that involve all stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector, and local communities. This includes improving waste collection and recycling facilities, promoting public education on waste segregation and recycling, and enforcing regulations to deter illegal dumping practices. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the importance of sustainable waste management practices, such as composting organic waste, promoting the use of biodegradable materials, and investing in waste-to-energy technologies. These initiatives not only help reduce the volume of waste in landfills but also create economic opportunities and contribute to environmental conservation efforts. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the impact of solid waste in urban centers in Nigeria and offers practical recommendations for improving waste management practices. By implementing sustainable solutions and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, urban areas in Nigeria can mitigate the adverse effects of solid waste and move towards a cleaner and healthier environment.
