Abstract
Methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria have become a growing concern due to their significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and their potential impact on climate change. This research project aimed to investigate the effect of methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria by analyzing the current state of landfill management practices, quantifying methane emissions, and assessing the environmental and health implications. The study utilized a combination of field measurements, including on-site methane concentration monitoring and landfill gas composition analysis, as well as data collection from relevant government agencies and literature review. The findings revealed that methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria are substantial, with factors such as waste composition, management practices, and site characteristics influencing the rate of emissions. The research highlighted the importance of implementing effective landfill gas management strategies, such as gas collection and utilization systems, to mitigate methane emissions and reduce their impact on the environment. Additionally, the study emphasized the need for stringent regulations and enforcement mechanisms to ensure proper landfill gas control measures are in place. Furthermore, the environmental and health implications of methane emissions from landfills were assessed, including their contribution to local air pollution, potential health risks to nearby communities, and their role in global climate change. The results underscored the urgent need for improved waste management practices, including waste segregation, recycling, and composting, to reduce the organic content of landfilled waste and minimize methane generation. Overall, this research contributes to the existing knowledge on methane emissions from landfills in Nigeria and provides valuable insights for policymakers, waste management authorities, and researchers to develop targeted strategies for reducing methane emissions and mitigating their environmental and health impacts. By addressing the challenges associated with landfill gas management, Nigeria can move towards more sustainable waste management practices and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.
