Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis explores the implementation of a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) framework for startups, aiming to evaluate and enhance the social impact generated by these emerging ventures. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the social responsibility of businesses, including startups, to contribute positively to society. However, many startups face challenges in measuring and communicating their social impact effectively. The lack of a standardized framework for assessing social impact hinders startups from demonstrating their contribution to societal well-being and sustainability. The research begins with an introduction highlighting the importance of social impact assessment for startups and the need for a structured framework to guide this process. The background of the study provides insights into the current landscape of social impact assessment in the startup ecosystem, emphasizing the gaps and opportunities for improvement. The problem statement identifies the challenges faced by startups in measuring and communicating their social impact, underscoring the significance of developing a tailored SIA framework for this specific context. The objectives of the study are to design a practical and comprehensive SIA framework that addresses the unique characteristics and challenges of startups, to pilot test the framework with a select group of startups, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the framework in enhancing social impact measurement and communication. The limitations of the study are acknowledged, including potential constraints in the implementation of the framework and the generalizability of the findings. The scope of the study focuses on startups operating in various industries and regions, aiming to develop a flexible SIA framework that can be adapted to different contexts. The significance of the study lies in its potential to empower startups to better understand, measure, and communicate their social impact, thereby fostering a culture of social responsibility and sustainability within the startup ecosystem. The structure of the thesis comprises several chapters, including an introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, and conclusion. The definitions of key terms related to social impact assessment and startups are provided to establish a common understanding of the concepts discussed throughout the thesis. In the literature review, ten key themes related to social impact assessment, startup evaluation, and sustainability practices are explored to inform the development of the SIA framework. The research methodology outlines the research design, data collection methods, sampling strategy, and analysis techniques employed in the study, emphasizing the participatory approach in co-creating the SIA framework with startup stakeholders. The discussion of findings presents the results of the pilot testing of the SIA framework, including the challenges faced, lessons learned, and recommendations for future implementation. The conclusion summarizes the key findings of the study, highlights the implications for startups and stakeholders, and suggests areas for further research and development in the field of social impact assessment for startups. Overall, this thesis contributes to the ongoing discourse on social impact assessment and sustainability practices in the startup ecosystem, offering a practical framework to support startups in maximizing their positive social contributions and creating a more inclusive and sustainable entrepreneurial landscape.
