Abstract
This thesis explores the representation of gender in contemporary African literature through a comparative study. The study examines how gender roles, stereotypes, and identities are portrayed in a selection of African literary works from different regions and time periods. By analyzing the textual representations of male and female characters, the research aims to uncover the underlying ideologies and cultural norms that shape these portrayals. The literature review section provides a comprehensive analysis of existing scholarship on gender in African literature, highlighting key themes, trends, and debates in the field. Drawing on a wide range of critical perspectives, the review situates the study within the broader context of gender studies and postcolonial theory. The research methodology section outlines the theoretical frameworks, research design, and methods employed in the comparative analysis of the selected literary texts. Through a combination of close reading, thematic analysis, and comparative approaches, the study seeks to identify common patterns and divergences in the representation of gender across different works. The findings section presents the results of the comparative analysis, revealing how gender is constructed, negotiated, and contested in the selected African literary texts. By examining the ways in which male and female characters are depicted in relation to power, agency, and social norms, the study uncovers the complex dynamics of gender representation in contemporary African literature.
