This thesis explores the portrayal of gender roles in modern Nigerian literature, focusing on how various literary works reflect and challenge traditional gender norms in Nigerian society. The research investigates the representation of male and female characters, the dynamics of power and agency, and the construction of gender identities in selected Nigerian literary texts. Through a comprehensive analysis of key themes, narrative strategies, and characterizations, this study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of how Nigerian writers engage with gender issues in their works. The research draws on feminist literary theory, postcolonial theory, and cultural studies to contextualize the analysis within broader discourses on gender and society. By examining a range of literary works from different genres and time periods, this thesis contributes to a deeper appreciation of the complexities of gender representation in Nigerian literature and sheds light on the ways in which writers both reflect and influence societal attitudes towards gender roles.
