Abstract
This thesis delves into the intricate exploration of the theme of identity within the realm of contemporary African literature. The study seeks to unravel the multifaceted dimensions of identity as portrayed in literary works by African authors, examining how these narratives reflect the complexities of individual and collective identities in the African context. The research is grounded in the belief that literature serves as a powerful tool for understanding, articulating, and interrogating issues of identity. The introductory chapter sets the stage by providing a comprehensive overview of the background of the study, articulating the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the thesis, as well as defining key terms essential for understanding the research context. Chapter two presents a meticulous literature review comprising ten key themes that have emerged in contemporary African literature concerning identity. These themes include but are not limited to, cultural identity, post-colonial identity, gender identity, diasporic identity, and hybrid identities. The chapter critically engages with a range of literary works by renowned African authors, analyzing how they navigate and portray the complexities of identity in diverse social, political, and cultural contexts.
