Gender roles have been a significant aspect of literary discourse, reflecting societal norms, expectations, and power dynamics. This thesis explores the representation of gender roles in contemporary Nigerian literature, focusing on how male and female characters are portrayed in various literary works. The study examines a selection of Nigerian novels, short stories, and poems to analyze the depiction of gender roles and the implications for social constructs and cultural identity. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the thesis. It also includes definitions of key terms related to gender roles in literature. Chapter Two comprises a comprehensive literature review that critically analyzes existing scholarly works on gender roles in Nigerian literature. This chapter discusses ten key themes and perspectives that have emerged in previous research, providing a foundation for the current study. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures.
