The representation of gender roles in literature has been a topic of significant interest and debate within the field of English and Literary Studies. This thesis explores the portrayal of gender roles in contemporary British literature, focusing on how male and female characters are depicted and the impact of these representations on societal norms and perceptions. The study aims to analyze a diverse range of literary works from the late 20th century to the present day, examining the ways in which authors construct and challenge traditional gender roles through their characters and narratives. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, offering background information on the significance of studying gender roles in literature, presenting the problem statement, outlining the objectives of the study, discussing the limitations and scope of the research, highlighting the significance of the study, and providing an overview of the thesis structure. The chapter also includes definitions of key terms related to gender roles and literary analysis. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review that examines existing scholarship on the representation of gender roles in British literature. This chapter synthesizes previous research, identifies gaps in the literature, and establishes a theoretical framework for the current study. Through a critical analysis of key themes and trends in gender representation in literature, this chapter contextualizes the research within the broader academic discourse.
