Abstract
This thesis explores the multifaceted representation of mental illness in contemporary literature. The portrayal of mental health issues in literary works has been a subject of growing interest due to its potential to challenge societal perceptions and raise awareness. Through an in-depth analysis of various literary texts, this study aims to shed light on the diverse ways in which mental illness is depicted, understood, and contextualized in contemporary literature. The introductory chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the research topic, including the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and the structure of the thesis. The subsequent chapter presents a detailed literature review, encompassing ten key themes related to the representation of mental illness in literature. This review serves as a foundation for the subsequent chapters, offering insights into existing scholarship and critical perspectives on the subject matter. Chapter three delves into the research methodology employed in this study, outlining the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures. The methodology chapter also discusses ethical considerations and potential limitations faced during the research process. Chapter four presents a comprehensive discussion of the findings derived from the analysis of selected literary works. Through a thematic analysis approach, this chapter explores the various ways in which mental illness is portrayed in contemporary literature, including the use of narrative techniques, character development, and thematic elements.
