Abstract
The research study aimed to investigate the impact of social media usage on mental health among adolescents. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative survey was distributed to a sample of 500 adolescents aged 13-18, while qualitative interviews were conducted with a subset of 20 participants selected from the survey respondents. The findings of the study revealed a significant correlation between social media usage and mental health issues among adolescents. The quantitative data indicated that higher levels of social media use were associated with increased levels of anxiety and depression symptoms. Furthermore, adolescents who reported spending more time on social media also experienced higher levels of stress and feelings of loneliness. The qualitative interviews provided deeper insights into the ways in which social media impacted the mental well-being of adolescents. Participants described how excessive social media use led to negative self-comparisons, feelings of inadequacy, and a fear of missing out. Additionally, cyberbullying and online harassment were identified as prevalent issues that contributed to mental health struggles among adolescents. However, the study also identified some positive aspects of social media use, such as the ability to connect with peers, access information, and seek support during difficult times. Participants highlighted the importance of using social media mindfully and setting boundaries to maintain a healthy balance. Overall, the research findings emphasize the complex relationship between social media usage and mental health among adolescents. While social media can provide valuable social connections and resources, it also poses risks to mental well-being if not used responsibly. The study underscores the need for parents, educators, and mental health professionals to be aware of these risks and provide support and guidance to help adolescents navigate the digital landscape safely. Further research is recommended to explore effective interventions and strategies to promote positive mental health outcomes in the context of social media use among adolescents.
