Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. Social media has become an integral part of young people's lives, with various platforms providing opportunities for communication, self-expression, and social interaction. However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential negative effects of excessive social media use on mental well-being. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from adolescents aged 13-18. The quantitative phase will focus on assessing the frequency and duration of social media use, as well as exploring potential correlations between social media usage patterns and mental health indicators such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews will be conducted to gain insight into the subjective experiences of adolescents regarding their social media usage and its impact on their mental health. Participants will be asked about the ways in which social media affects their emotions, relationships, self-image, and overall well-being. The research aims to contribute to the existing literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between social media and mental health in adolescents. Findings from this study can inform the development of targeted interventions and strategies to promote healthy social media usage habits and support adolescents in maintaining positive mental well-being. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative data analysis, this research project seeks to uncover the nuances of the social media-mental health relationship, taking into account individual differences, contextual factors, and the broader socio-cultural influences on adolescents' digital behaviors and psychological well-being. By examining both the benefits and risks associated with social media use, this study aims to offer practical insights for parents, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers to support adolescents in navigating the digital landscape in a way that promotes their mental health and overall well-being.
