Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The impact of social media on mental health has become a topic of increasing concern in recent years. This study aims to investigate the relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes, focusing on both the positive and negative effects. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to explore existing research on the subject, with a focus on studies published within the last five years. The findings suggest that social media use can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on mental health. On the positive side, social media platforms can provide opportunities for social connection, emotional support, and self-expression, which can have a positive impact on mental well-being. These platforms can also be a source of valuable health information and resources, promoting awareness and mental health literacy. Additionally, social media can be a tool for advocacy and support for individuals struggling with mental health issues, fostering a sense of community and reducing stigma. However, the negative effects of social media on mental health should not be overlooked. Excessive use of social media has been linked to increased feelings of loneliness, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. The constant exposure to idealized images and lifestyles on social media can contribute to negative body image perceptions and feelings of inadequacy. Cyberbullying and online harassment are prevalent on social media platforms, leading to significant psychological distress and negative mental health outcomes. Moreover, the addictive nature of social media, characterized by compulsive checking and fear of missing out (FOMO), can disrupt sleep patterns and contribute to poor mental health. The comparison to others on social media, often based on curated and exaggerated representations of life, can lead to feelings of inadequacy and social isolation. In conclusion, the relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes is complex and multifaceted. While social media can offer benefits such as social connection and support, it also poses risks to mental well-being through factors like cyberbullying, comparison, and addiction. Future research should continue to explore these dynamics and develop strategies to promote a healthier relationship with social media, ensuring that individuals can maximize the benefits while mitigating the potential harms to mental health.
