Abstract
This research project investigates the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. The prevalence of social media use among young people has increased dramatically in recent years, raising concerns about its potential effects on mental well-being. The study aims to explore the relationship between social media usage patterns and mental health outcomes in adolescents aged 13-18. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining quantitative surveys to assess social media usage habits and mental health indicators such as depression and anxiety levels, with qualitative interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the subjective experiences and perceptions of participants. The sample will consist of 500 adolescents from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The quantitative analysis will focus on identifying correlations between time spent on social media, types of platforms used, and mental health outcomes. It will also examine potential mediating factors such as social support, cyberbullying experiences, and self-esteem. The qualitative component will explore themes related to social media usage motivations, perceived benefits and drawbacks, and coping strategies employed by adolescents. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on social media and mental health by providing insights into the nuanced ways in which social media may influence adolescent well-being. By combining quantitative and qualitative data, this research aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in this relationship. Implications for mental health professionals, educators, and policymakers will be discussed based on the study results. Recommendations for promoting healthy social media use among adolescents and supporting their mental health needs will be provided. The study also has the potential to inform the development of targeted interventions and educational programs aimed at enhancing digital literacy and resilience in young people. Overall, this research project seeks to shed light on the multifaceted interplay between social media and mental health in adolescents, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach that considers individual, interpersonal, and societal factors. The ultimate goal is to foster a more informed dialogue and evidence-based strategies for promoting positive mental health outcomes in the digital age.
