Abstract
The research investigates the impact of social media on mental health among teenagers. It explores the various ways in which social media platforms influence the mental well-being of adolescents, focusing on factors such as social comparison, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), and self-esteem issues. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of teenagers aged 13-18 years. The results indicate that social media use is associated with both positive and negative effects on teenagers' mental health. While social media can provide a sense of connection and support, it also exposes teenagers to cyberbullying, unrealistic body image standards, and feelings of inadequacy. The findings suggest that excessive time spent on social media is linked to higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among teenagers. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of parental monitoring and support in mitigating the negative impact of social media on teenagers' mental health. Adolescents who reported higher levels of parental involvement in their social media use exhibited lower levels of psychological distress and higher self-esteem. The results underscore the importance of open communication between parents and teenagers regarding social media usage and its potential risks. In conclusion, the research emphasizes the complex relationship between social media and mental health among teenagers. While social media offers opportunities for social connection and self-expression, it also poses significant challenges to adolescents' mental well-being. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and educational programs to promote healthy social media habits and enhance teenagers' resilience to the negative effects of online platforms. By fostering a supportive environment both online and offline, parents, educators, and mental health professionals can help teenagers navigate the digital landscape and protect their mental health in an increasingly connected world.
