Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health, specifically focusing on the relationship between social media usage and psychological well-being among young adults. Social media has become an integral part of daily life for many individuals, especially the younger generation. While social media platforms offer numerous benefits such as connectivity, information sharing, and social support, there is growing concern about the potential negative effects they may have on mental health. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on young adults' social media usage patterns and their perceptions of how it influences their mental health. The quantitative survey will assess participants' frequency and duration of social media use, the platforms they use, and their self-reported psychological well-being using standardized scales such as the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21). Additionally, the survey will include questions about perceived social support and the impact of social media on self-esteem and body image. Qualitative interviews will provide in-depth insights into the subjective experiences of young adults in relation to social media and mental health. Participants will be asked about their motivations for using social media, the emotional responses they have while using these platforms, and any negative consequences they perceive on their mental well-being. The qualitative data will be analyzed thematically to identify common themes and patterns related to social media use and mental health outcomes. The findings of this research will contribute to a better understanding of the complex relationship between social media and mental health among young adults. By exploring both the positive and negative aspects of social media use, this study aims to provide insights that can inform interventions and strategies to promote positive mental health outcomes in this population. The results may have implications for mental health professionals, educators, policymakers, and social media companies in developing guidelines and resources to support young adults in cultivating a healthy relationship with social media.
