Thesis Abstract

The abstract of the research content is as follows This research project investigates the impact of social media usage on mental health among young adults. The study focuses on understanding how the increasing presence of social media platforms influences the mental well-being of individuals aged 18 to 30 years. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative surveys to gather data on social media usage patterns and mental health assessments, as well as qualitative interviews to explore the subjective experiences and perceptions of participants. Preliminary findings indicate a complex relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes. While some participants reported positive aspects such as social connection, support, and access to information, others highlighted negative effects including feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. The frequency and duration of social media use emerged as important factors influencing these outcomes, with excessive use correlating with higher levels of psychological distress. Moreover, the study reveals differences in the impact of various social media platforms on mental health. Participants noted that image-focused platforms like Instagram and Snapchat tended to exacerbate comparison and self-esteem issues, while more text-based platforms such as Twitter were perceived as less detrimental. The role of social media in facilitating cyberbullying and online harassment also emerged as a significant concern, with several participants reporting experiences of negative interactions that affected their mental well-being. Furthermore, the research explores coping mechanisms employed by young adults to mitigate the negative impact of social media on their mental health. Strategies such as limiting screen time, unfollowing accounts that trigger negative emotions, and seeking support from offline relationships were commonly cited as effective ways to maintain a healthy relationship with social media. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of digital literacy and mental health education in promoting positive online experiences and reducing the risk of harm associated with social media use. Overall, this research contributes to the growing body of literature on the intersection of social media and mental health, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and support systems to address the challenges faced by young adults in the digital age. The findings underscore the importance of promoting awareness, responsible use, and self-care practices to foster a more positive and supportive online environment for individuals' mental well-being.
