Thesis Abstract

The ability to learn a second language is a complex process that can be influenced by various factors. This research project aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the problems associated with learning a second language. The study will explore these difficulties by comparing the experiences of learners from different linguistic backgrounds and educational settings. One of the key issues related to second language acquisition is the influence of the learner's first language. Research has shown that learners whose first language is structurally similar to the target language may have an advantage in acquiring certain linguistic features. On the other hand, learners whose first language is vastly different from the target language may struggle with pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Another significant challenge in learning a second language is the impact of age. Younger learners tend to pick up new languages more easily and develop native-like pronunciation, while older learners may face difficulties in achieving fluency and natural-sounding speech. This project will investigate how age affects language learning outcomes and the strategies that learners of different ages employ to overcome obstacles. Furthermore, the learning environment plays a crucial role in shaping the language learning experience. Factors such as exposure to the target language, quality of instruction, and opportunities for practice can greatly impact learners' proficiency and confidence. By comparing language learning programs in different educational settings, this study will identify the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches and their implications for learners. Additionally, cultural factors can also pose challenges for second language learners. Differences in communication styles, social norms, and cultural values between the learner's native culture and the target language community can lead to misunderstandings and difficulties in language use. Through a comparative analysis of learners from diverse cultural backgrounds, this research will explore how cultural differences influence language learning and communication. In conclusion, this comparative analysis of the problems associated with learning a second language will provide valuable insights into the complexities of language acquisition. By examining the interplay of linguistic, cognitive, social, and cultural factors, this study aims to enhance our understanding of the challenges that learners face and inform the development of more effective language teaching methods and materials.
