Abstract
The research project focuses on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. In an increasingly digital world, social media platforms have become a ubiquitous presence in the lives of young people. This study aims to explore the various ways in which social media usage can influence the mental well-being of adolescents. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. A sample of adolescents aged 13-18 will be recruited from schools and youth organizations to participate in the study. The quantitative surveys will assess the frequency and duration of social media use, as well as the types of platforms used. Additionally, standardized measures of mental health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem will be included in the survey. The qualitative interviews will delve deeper into the experiences and perceptions of adolescents regarding social media and mental health. Participants will be asked about the impact of social media on their emotions, relationships, and self-image. The interviews will also explore coping strategies that adolescents employ to deal with negative experiences on social media. Data analysis will involve both quantitative statistical techniques and qualitative thematic analysis. The quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlational analysis, and regression modeling to identify patterns and relationships between social media use and mental health outcomes. The qualitative data from the interviews will be transcribed, coded, and thematically analyzed to identify recurring themes and insights. The findings of this research project will contribute to a better understanding of the complex relationship between social media and mental health among adolescents. By examining both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of social media use, this study aims to provide a nuanced perspective on the potential benefits and risks associated with adolescent social media usage. The results will have implications for educators, parents, mental health professionals, and policymakers in developing strategies to promote positive mental health outcomes in young people in the digital age.
