Abstract
This research project aims to explore the impact of social media on mental health among teenagers. Social media has become an integral part of daily life for many individuals, especially teenagers who are heavy users of platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. The project will investigate how the use of social media can influence mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and body image issues. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on teenagers' social media usage and its effects on their mental well-being. By examining both the frequency and nature of social media interactions, as well as individuals' perceptions of these interactions, the research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the relationship between social media and mental health. The project will also explore potential moderators and mediators of this relationship, including factors such as social support, cyberbullying, and comparison with others on social media. By identifying these variables, the study seeks to elucidate the mechanisms through which social media can impact mental health outcomes among teenagers. Furthermore, the research will investigate potential differences in the impact of various social media platforms on mental health. Each platform has unique features and content that may influence users differently, and understanding these differences can provide insights into how to mitigate negative effects and promote positive outcomes for teenagers using social media. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of research on social media and mental health by offering a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between the two. By considering both the quantity and quality of social media use, as well as individual differences and platform-specific effects, the research aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, mental health professionals, and teenagers themselves. Ultimately, the goal of this project is to generate evidence-based recommendations for promoting healthy social media use among teenagers and minimizing the potential negative impact on their mental health. By shedding light on the complex interplay between social media and mental well-being, the research aims to contribute to efforts aimed at fostering positive online experiences and supporting the mental health of young individuals in an increasingly digital world.
