Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among teenagers. With the rise of social media platforms in recent years, concerns have been raised about their potential negative effects on the mental well-being of young individuals. The study will explore how various social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter influence the mental health of teenagers in terms of self-esteem, body image, loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of teenagers aged 13 to 19. The surveys will assess the frequency of social media use, the types of content consumed, and the perceived impact on mental health. The interviews will provide in-depth insights into the experiences and perceptions of teenagers regarding social media and mental health. Through statistical analysis of survey data and thematic analysis of interview transcripts, the study aims to identify patterns and associations between social media use and mental health outcomes among teenagers. The research also seeks to explore potential moderating factors such as age, gender, and duration of social media use that may influence the relationship between social media and mental health. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the effects of social media on mental health, particularly among teenagers. By gaining a deeper understanding of how social media impacts various aspects of mental well-being, this research can inform strategies for promoting positive online experiences and mitigating potential harms. The results may also have implications for parents, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers in addressing the challenges posed by social media use among teenagers. Overall, this research project seeks to shed light on the complex interplay between social media and mental health in the teenage population. By examining the ways in which social media platforms influence perceptions of self and others, feelings of connectedness, and emotional well-being, this study aims to provide valuable insights that can guide future interventions and support efforts to foster a healthier online environment for teenagers.
