Abstract
This research project focuses on exploring the impact of social media usage on mental health among teenagers. Social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of teenagers, with platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter being widely used for communication and social interaction. While social media offers various benefits in terms of connectivity and information sharing, it has also been linked to negative effects on mental well-being. The study aims to investigate how excessive use of social media can contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem among teenagers. By conducting surveys and interviews with adolescents, the research seeks to understand the psychological mechanisms through which social media influences mental health outcomes. Factors such as cyberbullying, social comparison, fear of missing out (FOMO), and online harassment will be examined to determine their impact on mental well-being. In addition, the project will explore the role of parental involvement and digital literacy in mitigating the negative effects of social media on teenagers' mental health. By analyzing the strategies that parents can employ to promote healthy social media usage and educate their children about online risks, the research aims to provide practical recommendations for families and schools to support adolescents in navigating the digital world safely. Furthermore, the study will investigate the potential benefits of social media in promoting mental health awareness and providing support for teenagers facing mental health challenges. By examining the use of online platforms for mental health advocacy and peer support, the research aims to highlight the positive impact of social media in addressing mental health stigma and facilitating access to resources for young people in need. Overall, this research project seeks to contribute to the existing literature on social media and mental health by providing insights into the complex relationship between online platforms and psychological well-being among teenagers. By identifying risk factors and protective factors associated with social media use, the study aims to inform interventions and policies aimed at promoting healthy digital habits and supporting the mental health of young individuals in today's digital age.
