Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The research project aimed to investigate the impact of social media usage on mental health among teenagers. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of 500 teenagers aged 13 to 18. The quantitative survey instrument measured the frequency and duration of social media use, types of platforms used, and self-reported mental health indicators such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. The qualitative interviews provided in-depth insights into the teenagers' perceptions of social media's influence on their mental well-being. The findings revealed a complex relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes. While some teenagers reported positive experiences, such as feeling connected to peers and accessing emotional support online, others expressed concerns about cyberbullying, social comparison, and fear of missing out. The quantitative data indicated that higher levels of social media use were associated with increased symptoms of anxiety and depression, particularly among adolescents who spent more than two hours per day on social networking sites. However, the qualitative interviews highlighted that the impact of social media on mental health was not solely determined by usage patterns but also by individual coping strategies, social support networks, and the nature of online interactions. Moreover, the study identified gender differences in social media behavior and mental health outcomes. Female teenagers were more likely to engage in social comparison and experience negative emotions related to their online presence, while male teenagers reported higher levels of online aggression and exposure to harmful content. These gender disparities underscore the importance of considering intersectional factors, such as gender identity and social norms, when examining the effects of social media on mental health. Overall, the research project contributes to the growing body of literature on social media and mental health by providing nuanced insights into teenagers' experiences and perceptions. The findings suggest that while social media can offer valuable social connections and support, it also poses risks to adolescents' mental well-being. Future interventions and policies should focus on promoting digital literacy, fostering positive online behaviors, and enhancing mental health resources for teenagers in the digital age.
