Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Cultism is a pervasive issue that has significant effects on social, political, and economic development in various societies. This research project aims to explore the multifaceted impact of cultism on these areas, highlighting the interconnectedness of these aspects. Through a comprehensive literature review and empirical analysis, this study delves into the detrimental influence of cultism on social cohesion, political stability, and economic progress. The social implications of cultism are profound, as it disrupts community harmony, undermines trust among individuals, and fosters fear and insecurity. Cult groups often engage in violent activities, leading to increased crime rates and a breakdown of social order. This, in turn, hampers social development by impeding cooperation and collaboration among community members, hindering the establishment of social welfare programs, and creating barriers to social mobility. On the political front, cultism poses a serious threat to democratic governance and political stability. Cult groups may infiltrate political structures, exerting influence through coercion, corruption, and intimidation. This can undermine the democratic process, erode public trust in institutions, and perpetuate a cycle of violence and impunity. Moreover, the presence of cultism in politics can lead to policy distortion, favoritism, and the subversion of the rule of law, further impeding effective governance and hindering political development. In terms of economic development, cultism has detrimental effects on productivity, investment, and overall economic growth. The prevalence of cult activities deters investors, both domestic and foreign, due to concerns about security and instability. Additionally, resources that could have been allocated to productive economic activities are diverted towards combating crime, maintaining security, and addressing the social consequences of cultism. This drains public coffers, limits government spending on critical infrastructure and social services, and stifles economic progress. Overall, this research project sheds light on the intricate ways in which cultism impacts social, political, and economic development. By understanding the interconnected nature of these effects, policymakers, stakeholders, and communities can develop more effective strategies to combat cultism and mitigate its harmful consequences. Addressing cultism requires a multi-faceted approach that combines law enforcement efforts, community engagement, social programs, and economic initiatives to foster a more inclusive, stable, and prosperous society.

Thesis Overview

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Cultism in Nigeria has become a house hold name in most the Nigerian communities and the activities are seen as normal before the citizens of Nigeria. The growth of cultism has significant effect on the social, political and economic development in Nigeria. It is evident that cultism started in the higher institutions in Nigeria back to the early 50s by Nigerian’s only noble laureate, professor Wole Soyinka and the effect is seen in most of the Nigerian societies; although the motive behind the formation was to put an end to tribalism, political injustice etc so as to enhance social life in most of the Nigeria campuses.

According to Adejoro (1995) stated that little did Wole Soyinka and his friends realized that they were making history nor did they come to terms with the fact that students and indeed youths radicalism was being given a national boost and the unleashing of a national vanguardThe development was paradoxical to the extent that they little realized that they were laying the foundation for what was to be transformed eventually into gansterism.
In defining cultism, Azelama, Alude and Imhonda (2000) noted that “cult is an assemblage of people united by certain ideals, or symbols and whose rites and ceremonies of veneration are unique and shrouded in mysteries with a secrecy that cannot be broken.” Maxey (2004) traces the meaning of cult from the Latin word ‘cultus’ which means ‘to worship or give reverence to a deity.’ Thus, in its original usage, it was simply applied to a religious worshipful group of people regardless of the object or person they venerated.

The prevalence of cultism has been seen in most of our communities, universities, organization and the Nigeria political system. In most of our communities the effect of cultism is seen in the destruction of properties, hindrances to infrastructural development, harassment and molestation etc. which in turn affect the socio economic development and well being of the people in most of these communities.
