Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the proximate and the effect of labour unionism on the administration of Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U.), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Labour unionism plays a significant role in shaping the dynamics of organizational administration, particularly in academic institutions like universities. The study will focus on understanding the underlying factors that drive labour unionism at O.A.U., examining the historical context of union activities, and analyzing the impact of unionism on the overall administration of the university. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. Qualitative data will be gathered through interviews with key stakeholders, including university administrators, faculty members, and union representatives. These interviews will provide insights into the motivations behind union activities and the challenges faced by both the union and the university administration. Quantitative data will be collected through surveys and document analysis to assess the tangible effects of labour unionism on various aspects of the university administration, such as governance, decision-making processes, and overall organizational effectiveness. By triangulating the qualitative and quantitative findings, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the proximate and ultimate effects of labour unionism on the administration of O.A.U., Ile-Ife. The study also seeks to explore potential areas of collaboration and conflict between the university administration and the labour unions, with a view to recommending strategies for fostering a more harmonious relationship that benefits both parties. Understanding the complexities of labour unionism within the academic context is crucial for promoting a conducive working environment and ensuring the effective functioning of the university as a whole. Overall, this research project will contribute to the existing literature on labour unionism in academic institutions and provide valuable insights for university administrators, union leaders, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in higher education management. By shedding light on the proximate and ultimate effects of labour unionism on the administration of O.A.U., Ile-Ife, this study aims to inform decision-making processes and foster positive changes that enhance the overall governance and performance of the university.
