Abstract
The research investigates the impact of social media on mental health among young adults. A mixed-methods approach was employed to gather data from a sample of 300 participants aged between 18-25 years. The study utilized surveys to collect quantitative data on social media usage patterns and mental health indicators, including stress levels, anxiety, and self-esteem. Additionally, focus group interviews were conducted to gain in-depth qualitative insights into the participants' perceptions and experiences related to social media and mental well-being. The quantitative findings revealed a significant association between social media usage and mental health outcomes. Higher levels of social media engagement were correlated with increased stress and anxiety among young adults. Moreover, participants who reported spending more time on social media platforms showed lower self-esteem levels compared to those with limited usage. These results suggest that excessive use of social media may have detrimental effects on the mental well-being of young adults. The qualitative analysis provided further context to these quantitative findings by highlighting the underlying mechanisms driving the relationship between social media and mental health. Participants expressed feelings of social comparison, fear of missing out, and pressure to maintain an idealized online image as key stressors stemming from their social media interactions. Moreover, the focus group discussions underscored the role of cyberbullying and online harassment in contributing to feelings of anxiety and low self-worth among young adults. Overall, the study indicates that social media plays a significant role in shaping the mental health of young adults. The findings suggest the need for interventions and support mechanisms to promote healthy social media usage habits and mitigate the negative impact on mental well-being. By raising awareness about the potential risks associated with excessive social media engagement, mental health professionals, educators, and policymakers can work together to empower young adults with the necessary skills to navigate the online world safely and mindfully.
