Abstract
This research project explores the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. With the increasing use of social media platforms by young people, concerns have been raised about the potential negative effects on mental well-being. The study aims to investigate the relationship between social media usage patterns and mental health outcomes in adolescents. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining surveys to gather quantitative data on social media use and mental health indicators, as well as interviews to gain insights into the subjective experiences of adolescents. The sample will consist of adolescents aged 13-18 years old from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The quantitative analysis will focus on examining correlations between time spent on social media, types of content consumed, interaction patterns, and mental health measures such as depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. Additionally, the qualitative data will provide context and depth to understand how social media influences adolescents' perceptions of themselves and others. The findings from this study aim to contribute to the existing literature on the complex relationship between social media and mental health in adolescents. By exploring both the quantitative and qualitative aspects, this research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms through which social media may impact mental well-being. Implications of the study's results may inform parents, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers about the potential risks associated with excessive social media use. It may also highlight the importance of promoting healthy online behaviors and digital literacy skills among young people to mitigate negative mental health outcomes. Ultimately, this research project strives to generate evidence-based recommendations for supporting adolescents in navigating the digital landscape in a way that promotes positive mental health and well-being. By shedding light on the nuances of social media use among adolescents, this study aims to empower individuals and communities to foster a healthier relationship with technology and social platforms.
