Abstract
This research project focuses on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. With the increasing use of social media platforms among teenagers, concerns have been raised regarding its potential adverse effects on mental well-being. The study aims to explore the relationship between social media usage patterns and mental health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem among adolescents. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining quantitative surveys to gather data on social media usage patterns and mental health indicators, along with qualitative interviews to gain deeper insights into the subjective experiences of adolescents. The participants will be recruited from local high schools, and a diverse sample will be ensured to capture a range of social media behaviors and mental health profiles. The quantitative analysis will involve statistical tests to examine correlations between different social media activities (e.g., time spent, types of platforms used) and mental health outcomes. Additionally, regression analysis will be conducted to identify potential predictors of poor mental health among adolescents in relation to their social media habits. The qualitative interviews will focus on understanding the nuanced ways in which social media influences adolescents' self-perception, relationships, and emotional well-being. Thematic analysis will be used to identify recurring patterns and themes in the qualitative data, providing rich descriptions of the impact of social media on mental health from the perspective of adolescents themselves. By integrating both quantitative and qualitative data, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how social media affects mental health outcomes among adolescents. The findings will contribute to the existing literature by offering insights into the mechanisms through which social media can influence psychological well-being in this vulnerable population. The implications of this research could inform mental health interventions targeting adolescents who may be particularly susceptible to the negative effects of social media. By identifying specific risk factors associated with social media use, mental health professionals and educators can develop strategies to promote healthier online behaviors and support adolescents in cultivating positive mental health outcomes in the digital age.
