Abstract
This research project investigates the impact of social media on mental health, focusing on young adults. The study aims to explore how social media usage affects various aspects of mental well-being, including self-esteem, body image, anxiety, and depression among individuals aged 18-30. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining surveys and interviews to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The survey will assess social media usage patterns, self-esteem levels, body image perceptions, and mental health symptoms. The interviews will delve deeper into the participants' experiences, perceptions, and emotions related to social media and mental health. The research will involve a sample of 500 young adults recruited from various social media platforms. Participants will be asked to complete an online survey, which will be followed by semi-structured interviews with a subset of the sample. The data collected will be analyzed using statistical techniques for the survey data and thematic analysis for the interview transcripts. The findings of this study aim to provide insights into the complex relationship between social media and mental health among young adults. By understanding the mechanisms through which social media influences mental well-being, interventions and strategies can be developed to promote positive mental health outcomes in this population. The research also aims to highlight the potential benefits and risks of social media use, offering recommendations for both individuals and mental health professionals. Overall, this project contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical evidence on the impact of social media on mental health, particularly among young adults. The study's results have the potential to inform public health policies, educational programs, and clinical practices aimed at addressing mental health issues associated with social media use. Ultimately, the research seeks to raise awareness about the importance of promoting mental well-being in the digital age and to foster a healthier relationship with social media among young adults.
