Abstract
The research project focused on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. The study aimed to explore the relationship between social media usage and various mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and self-esteem. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining survey data with in-depth interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The survey was distributed among a sample of adolescents aged 13-18, capturing data on their social media habits, mental health status, and perceived impact of social media on their well-being. The results revealed a significant association between heavy social media use and higher levels of depression and anxiety among adolescents. Furthermore, adolescents who reported comparing themselves to others on social media experienced lower self-esteem. The qualitative interviews offered additional insights into the ways in which social media influences adolescents' mental health. Common themes that emerged from the interviews included feelings of inadequacy, fear of missing out, and pressure to present a curated online persona. Adolescents described how constant exposure to idealized images and lifestyles on social media contributed to feelings of insecurity and low self-worth. Overall, the findings suggest that social media can have detrimental effects on the mental health of adolescents. The constant connectivity and exposure to unrealistic standards on social media platforms can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and depression among young users. It is crucial for parents, educators, and mental health professionals to be aware of these risks and to support adolescents in developing healthy media habits. Future research in this area should continue to explore the complex relationship between social media use and mental health, taking into account individual differences, underlying mechanisms, and potential protective factors. Interventions aimed at promoting digital literacy, self-esteem, and coping strategies could help mitigate the negative impact of social media on adolescents' well-being. By fostering a more balanced and mindful approach to social media use, we can better support the mental health and resilience of young people in an increasingly digital world.
