Thesis Abstract

This research project aims to investigate the impact of social media usage on mental health among adolescents. The study will explore how various aspects of social media, such as time spent online, types of platforms used, and the nature of interactions, can influence the mental well-being of teenagers. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative aspect of the study will involve administering surveys to a large sample of adolescents to collect information on their social media habits, mental health symptoms, and overall well-being. Statistical analyses will be conducted to identify any significant correlations between different social media behaviors and mental health outcomes. Additionally, demographic factors such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status will be considered to understand how they may interact with social media use to impact mental health. In parallel, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a smaller group of adolescents to provide deeper insights into their personal experiences with social media and mental health. These interviews will allow participants to share their perspectives, emotions, and stories related to social media use and its effects on their mental well-being. Thematic analysis will be employed to identify common themes and patterns in the qualitative data, providing a rich understanding of the nuanced ways in which social media can influence mental health. By combining quantitative and qualitative data, this research aims to offer a comprehensive examination of the complex relationship between social media usage and mental health among adolescents. The findings of this study have the potential to contribute valuable insights to the fields of psychology, public health, and social media research. Understanding how social media impacts the mental well-being of teenagers is crucial in developing effective interventions and strategies to promote positive mental health in this vulnerable population. Overall, this research project seeks to address a significant gap in the current literature by providing a nuanced and multifaceted analysis of the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. By exploring both the quantitative associations and qualitative experiences of teenagers, this study aims to offer a holistic understanding of the complexities involved in this important issue.
