Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among young adults. The study will explore how the use of social media platforms can influence the mental well-being of individuals aged 18-30 years old. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of young adult social media users. The quantitative aspect of the study will involve distributing online surveys to assess the frequency and duration of social media use, as well as self-reported measures of mental health such as anxiety, depression, and self-esteem. The qualitative component will consist of in-depth interviews with a subset of survey participants to gain deeper insights into their experiences with social media and its effects on their mental well-being. By analyzing the survey data and interview transcripts, the research aims to identify patterns and correlations between social media usage patterns and mental health outcomes among young adults. The study will also explore the role of factors such as social comparison, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), and online validation in shaping the relationship between social media and mental health. The findings of this research project are expected to contribute to the existing body of literature on the topic by providing insights into the complex interplay between social media use and mental health among young adults. The results may have implications for mental health interventions targeted at this demographic group, as well as informing social media companies and policymakers on strategies to promote positive mental well-being in online environments. Overall, this study seeks to shed light on the potential benefits and risks of social media use for young adults' mental health and well-being. By examining the nuanced ways in which social media platforms can impact individuals' psychological health, the research aims to offer valuable recommendations for promoting a healthier relationship with social media among young adults.
