Abstract
The research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. With the increasing use of social media platforms among young people, concerns have been raised regarding its potential negative effects on mental well-being. The study will focus on exploring how different aspects of social media, such as excessive use, cyberbullying, and comparison to others, contribute to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem in adolescents. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining surveys and interviews with adolescents to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. The survey will assess the frequency of social media use, the types of platforms used, and the experiences of cyberbullying or negative comparisons. The interviews will provide deeper insights into how social media impacts the participants' self-perception, relationships, and overall mental health. The research will also investigate potential protective factors that may mitigate the negative impact of social media on mental health. This includes exploring the role of parental involvement, peer support, and digital literacy in promoting positive online experiences for adolescents. By identifying these protective factors, the study aims to provide recommendations for parents, educators, and policymakers on how to support young people in navigating social media in a healthy and positive way. The findings of this research project are expected to contribute to the existing literature on social media and mental health among adolescents. By gaining a better understanding of the specific mechanisms through which social media influences mental well-being, interventions and strategies can be developed to promote positive online behaviors and mental health outcomes in young people. Ultimately, the goal of this study is to raise awareness about the potential risks of social media use among adolescents and to empower individuals and communities to foster a safe and supportive online environment for youth.
