Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The research project focused on analyzing the impact of social media usage on mental health among adolescents. A thorough literature review was conducted to understand the existing body of research on this topic, highlighting the various perspectives and findings from previous studies. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative survey involved a sample of 500 adolescents, assessing their social media usage patterns, mental health symptoms, and perceived impact of social media on their well-being. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between excessive social media use and higher levels of anxiety and depression among adolescents. Additionally, the survey results indicated that cyberbullying and social comparison were common negative experiences associated with social media use. The qualitative interviews provided deeper insights into the subjective experiences of adolescents regarding social media and mental health. Themes such as FOMO (fear of missing out), online validation seeking, and digital detox emerged from the interviews, shedding light on the emotional and psychological effects of social media on adolescents. Participants also discussed coping mechanisms and strategies to promote positive mental health while using social media. Overall, the research findings suggest a complex relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes among adolescents. While social media offers opportunities for social connection and self-expression, it also presents risks to mental well-being through cyberbullying, comparison, and addiction. The study underscores the importance of promoting digital literacy and mental health education among adolescents to navigate the challenges of social media in a healthy manner. Implications for mental health professionals, educators, and policymakers are discussed, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and support systems to address the adverse effects of social media on adolescent mental health. Recommendations include implementing school-based programs on digital well-being, fostering open conversations about social media use, and providing resources for mental health support. By recognizing the nuanced interplay between social media and mental health, stakeholders can work towards creating a safer and more supportive online environment for adolescents.
