Abstract
The research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. Social media platforms have become an integral part of young people's lives, offering both opportunities for connection and risks for mental health concerns. This study will focus on exploring how social media usage patterns, content exposure, and interaction dynamics contribute to mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and self-esteem issues in adolescents. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of adolescents aged 13-18. Quantitative surveys will assess social media usage patterns, types of content consumed, frequency of use, and self-reported mental health indicators. Qualitative interviews will delve deeper into individual experiences, perceptions of social media's impact on mental well-being, coping strategies, and suggestions for promoting positive mental health in the context of social media use. The study hypothesizes that excessive time spent on social media, exposure to negative content, cyberbullying experiences, and comparison with idealized online representations may contribute to higher levels of mental health issues among adolescents. However, the research also aims to identify potential protective factors, such as social support networks, positive online interactions, and media literacy skills, that could mitigate the negative effects of social media on mental health. The findings of this research have the potential to inform interventions and educational programs aimed at promoting healthy social media use and mental well-being among adolescents. By understanding the specific mechanisms through which social media influences mental health outcomes, stakeholders including parents, educators, mental health professionals, and social media platforms can develop targeted strategies to support young people in navigating the digital landscape more effectively. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of research on the intersection of social media and mental health, shedding light on the complex relationship between online experiences and psychological well-being among adolescents. Through a comprehensive exploration of social media usage patterns and their impact on mental health, this research aims to provide valuable insights for promoting positive mental health outcomes in the digital age.
