Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The research project aimed to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. Social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of young people, with platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat being widely used for communication and self-expression. However, there is growing concern about the potential negative effects of excessive social media use on mental well-being, particularly among the vulnerable population of adolescents. The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of adolescents aged 13-18. The quantitative analysis focused on measuring the frequency and duration of social media use, as well as assessing mental health outcomes such as self-esteem, anxiety, and depression levels. The qualitative interviews provided valuable insights into the subjective experiences of participants regarding the impact of social media on their mental health. The findings revealed a complex relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes among adolescents. While some participants reported positive effects such as social connection, support, and self-expression, others described negative experiences including cyberbullying, social comparison, and feelings of inadequacy. The quantitative analysis also indicated a correlation between higher social media use and increased levels of anxiety and depression. Moreover, the study identified certain factors that moderated the impact of social media on mental health, such as parental involvement, peer relationships, and coping strategies. Participants who reported having supportive relationships and effective coping mechanisms were less likely to experience adverse mental health effects from social media use. Overall, the research project highlighted the importance of promoting awareness and responsible use of social media among adolescents. Interventions aimed at enhancing digital literacy skills, promoting positive online behaviors, and fostering supportive offline relationships could help mitigate the negative impact of social media on mental health. By understanding the complex interplay between social media use and mental well-being, parents, educators, and mental health professionals can work together to create a healthier online environment for adolescents.
