Abstract
The research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among teenagers. With the rise of social media platforms in recent years, concerns have been raised about their potential negative effects on adolescent mental health. This study seeks to explore how the use of social media influences various aspects of teenagers' mental well-being, including self-esteem, body image, anxiety, depression, and overall psychological health. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data on teenagers' social media usage patterns and their corresponding mental health status. A sample of teenagers aged 13-18 will be recruited from diverse socio-demographic backgrounds to ensure a representative study population. Quantitative surveys will assess the frequency and duration of social media use, types of platforms utilized, and self-reported perceptions of mental health. These surveys will provide valuable insights into the correlations between different social media behaviors and mental health outcomes among teenagers. Qualitative interviews will delve deeper into teenagers' subjective experiences with social media, exploring the emotional impacts, coping strategies, and perceived social comparisons that may contribute to mental health issues. By capturing the nuances of adolescents' interactions with social media, the qualitative data will enrich the understanding of how these platforms shape mental health perceptions and behaviors. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on social media and mental health, particularly in the context of adolescent well-being. By identifying specific patterns and mechanisms through which social media affects teenagers' mental health, this study aims to provide insights for educators, parents, and mental health professionals to develop targeted interventions and support systems. Ultimately, the goal of this research project is to promote a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between social media use and mental health among teenagers. By shedding light on both the positive and negative influences of social media on adolescent well-being, this study aspires to foster healthier and more informed social media practices that prioritize mental wellness for the younger generation.
