Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The study examines home video viewership among secondary school students in selected public schools. The research seeks to understand the patterns and trends of home video consumption among this demographic group in order to provide insights into their viewing habits and preferences. By conducting surveys and interviews with secondary school students, the study aims to gather data on the types of videos they watch, the platforms they use for viewing, the frequency of their viewing, and the impact of home video consumption on their academic performance and social behavior. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on media consumption among adolescents and provide valuable information for educators, parents, and policymakers. Understanding the role of home video viewership in the lives of secondary school students can help in designing more effective educational strategies that take into account their media preferences and behaviors. Additionally, the study aims to shed light on the potential benefits and risks associated with excessive video consumption, such as its impact on sleep patterns, physical activity levels, and social interactions. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gain a comprehensive understanding of home video viewership among secondary school students. The survey will collect data on demographics, viewing habits, preferred genres, and attitudes towards video content, while the interviews will provide deeper insights into the motivations and experiences of the participants. The study will focus on selected public schools to ensure a diverse representation of students from different backgrounds and socio-economic statuses. By including students from various grade levels and academic tracks, the research aims to capture a broad spectrum of perspectives on home video viewership and its impact on their daily lives. Overall, this research aims to provide a nuanced understanding of home video viewership among secondary school students, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges associated with this form of media consumption. By examining the factors that influence students' video viewing habits and the consequences of excessive viewing, the study aims to inform future interventions and policies aimed at promoting healthy media habits among adolescents.

Thesis Overview

The study investigated the influence of home television viewing on academic achievement of children in upper Basic Education Level in Kaduna State. The study established the influence of televisions viewing on the pupils’ language development and achievement in basic science. The study also determines the influence of televisions viewing on pupils’ numeracy development and achievement in social studies. The study was guided by four research questions and four formulated null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of probability. The design of the study was an ex-post facto survey design. The area of the study was Kaduna State of Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of all the children in the upper basic level of education in schools in Kaduna State. Multistage and stratified random sampling techniques were used in selecting the 320 pupils that were used for the study. A researcher-developed instrument called ‘pupils television viewing identification questionnaire’ (PTVIQ). The instrument was face validated by three experts in the department of vocational Teacher education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The internal consistency reliability coefficient obtained using Cronbach alpha method was 0.67. Data were collected by recording the continuous assessment scores of pupils on Mathematics, English languages, Basic Science and Social Studies. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while t-test analysis was used in testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study included: that home television viewers scored higher than the non-television viewers on Basic English continuous assessment tests; the home television viewers scored higher than the non-television viewers on basic Mathematics; at p<0.05, there was a significant difference between the mean scores of home television viewers and non-television viewers on Social Studies tests. It was recommended that the viewing of television in homes and schools especially on academic activities should be encouraged by parents and teachers to enhance pupils learning.
