This thesis investigates the phenomenon of code-switching within bilingual social media interactions. Code-switching, the practice of alternating between two or more languages or language varieties within a single discourse, is a common linguistic behavior observed in multilingual communities and communication settings. The prevalence of code-switching in social media platforms has garnered increasing attention from researchers interested in understanding the linguistic and sociocultural dynamics at play in online multilingual interactions. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the patterns and functions of code-switching in bilingual social media interactions, focusing on how language alternation is used by individuals to convey meaning, negotiate identity, and establish social relationships within online communities. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature on code-switching, bilingualism, and computer-mediated communication, this research aims to contribute to the current understanding of language practices in digital spaces. The methodology employed in this study includes a qualitative analysis of code-switching instances extracted from a diverse range of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Data collection involves the compilation of authentic bilingual social media posts and conversations, which are systematically analyzed to identify recurring patterns, linguistic features, and communicative functions of code-switching. The findings of this research reveal a rich and complex landscape of code-switching practices in bilingual social media interactions. The analysis uncovers various motivations behind code-switching, including the expression of cultural identity, the negotiation of social roles, and the creation of solidarity among community members. Moreover, the study highlights the role of code-switching in facilitating communication and establishing rapport in online multilingual environments.
