Abstract
The research project focused on investigating the impact of social media on mental health among adolescents. A thorough literature review was conducted to explore existing studies on the subject, highlighting the various ways in which social media usage can influence mental well-being. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. The quantitative survey involved a sample of 500 adolescents aged 13-18, assessing their social media usage patterns, mental health status, and perceptions of self-esteem and body image. The results indicated a significant correlation between social media usage frequency and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Furthermore, specific platforms like Instagram and Snapchat were found to have a more pronounced negative impact on mental health compared to others. In parallel, qualitative interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to delve deeper into their experiences and perceptions. The qualitative data provided valuable insights into the emotional and psychological effects of social media use, shedding light on factors such as cyberbullying, social comparison, and fear of missing out. Participants also shared coping mechanisms and strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of excessive social media engagement. Overall, the findings underscored the complex relationship between social media and mental health, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for adolescents navigating the digital landscape. The study contributes to the growing body of research on this topic, offering practical implications for parents, educators, and mental health professionals. By understanding the nuanced impact of social media on adolescents' well-being, stakeholders can develop targeted interventions and resources to promote healthier online behaviors and mental wellness. The research project highlights the importance of fostering digital literacy and resilience among young individuals to empower them in managing the psychological challenges associated with social media.
